IR MacIntosh to head dockyard committee

Group advises unions on Canadian naval shipbuilding

INTERNATIONAL REP Richard MacIntosh was elected president of the Federal Government Dockyard & Trades Labour Liaison Committee Nov. 9 in Ottawa, Ontario. The committee, which is composed of international reps from various labor unions, including both AFL-CIO and independent unions, assists and advises the Federal Government Dockyard Trades and Labour councils.

Approximately 2,000 members of the building trades are employed at Canadian naval dockyards, where they repair, maintain, upgrade and prepare ships for deployment to different parts of the world. About 165 members of Local Lodge 580 (Halifax, Nova Scotia) are employed at Her Majesty’s Canadian (HMC) Dockyard in Halifax. Eighty-five members of Local Lodge 191 (Victoria, British Columbia) work at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt in Victoria.

“This is a proud moment for the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers in Canada, as this is the first time we have one of our own serving as president of this committee,” said IVP Joe Maloney. “The opportunities to be involved in and further understand federal government shipbuilding and repair will truly enhance our position.”
