Members receive Code training on Lackawanna job

MOST trainers conduct three classes in two days

NEARLY 150 MEMBERS working at the Lackawanna Energy Center near Scranton, Pennsylvania, completed Boilermaker Code training July 19-20. Prime contractor Kiewit hosted the training at the project site. Approximately 175 Boilermakers representing 30 locals from across the United States are on the job, building elements of a new 1,500 MW combined cycle gas plant. Local 13 (Philadelphia) has jurisdiction for the Boilermakers’ work.

MOST holds project management training

Gerry Klimo introduces a skills development exercise in customer service.

FIFTEEN MEMBERS FROM 10 Boilermaker lodges traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, to attend a project management training class sponsored by MOST, the Boilermakers’ Mobilization, Optimization, Stabilization and Training Fund. Held at the Embassy Suites Hotel near Kansas City International Airport Jan. 23-27, the class teaches Boilermakers to take leadership roles in managing multi-craft projects, and to make decisions that positively benefit the owner, the contractor and the union.

IEC committee announces local, CFL winners

THE BOILERMAKERS’ International Executive Council has announced its selection of scholarship recipients for two local lodges and the Canadian Federation of Labour (CFL).

The committee selected Jason Boutilier, son of Daniel Boutilier, Lodge 73 (St. John, New Brunswick), and Dawn Elizabeth Curran, granddaughter of Edward Curran, Lodge 146 (Edmonton, Alberta), to each receive a $1,000 CFL scholarship award.

JIM DELSORDO has followed his passion for big game hunting across North America and as far away as South Africa. The Local 13 (Philadelphia) retiree and former lodge president is pictured with a gemsbok taken in South Africa in 2007. He has also hunted in Newfoundland, Canada (caribou); Wyoming (mule deer and antelope); and North Carolina (whitetail). During other trips to South Africa, he has taken a fallow deer and a kudu.

International announces scholarship winners

Thirty-one Boilermaker dependents earn awards totaling $50,000

THE BOILERMAKERS’ International Executive Council scholarship committee announced the winners of its 2015 scholarship program this past April. The committee awarded $50,000 to 31 recipients, with $38,000 being allocated to U.S. applicants and $12,000 to Canadian applicants.

Gift cites Boilermakers’ chemical wash and re-tube work

A JOB WELL done is often its own reward. But when members of Local 13 (Philadelphia) completed outage work at the NextEra Energy power plant in Marcus Hook, Pa., recently, contractors Delta Products Group and Thermal Solutions happily showed their appreciation with a contribution of $2,500 toward the local’s scholarship fund.

Apprenticeship areas plan 2015 contests

Local 456 will host national event

U.S. AREA APPRENTICESHIP committees have scheduled competitions for 2015. The events will be held as follows: Western States, May 4-7, at the Local 101 Training Center in Denver; Northeast/Great Lakes, June 1-4, at the Local 154 Training Center in Pittsburgh; and Southeast, June 28-July 2, at the Local 456 Training Center, Rock Hill, S.C.

The Boilermakers National Apprenticeship Competition will be held August 30-September 3 at the Local 456 Training Center.
