L-13’s Kling wins 2014 graduate apprentice title

Arthur Kling III, Local 13, enjoys the moment after being named winner of the 2014 U.S. National Apprenticeship Competition.

Runner-up spot goes to L-263’s Riley; Great Lakes Area takes team honors

ARTHUR KLING III, a member of Philadelphia Local 13 (Northeast Area), won top honors in the 2014 U.S. National Apprenticeship Competition held at the Mississippi River District Lodge 5/Local 37 training facility in Slidell, La., September 7-11. Kling scored best overall in a field of eight select candidates. The competition included a 10-hour-limit written exam and three days of practical exercises testing Boilermaker skills.

Newly-elected BM-STs attend 4-day training session in Kansas City, Mo., August 11-14.

Four-day event draws 21 from U.S. and Canada

TWENTY-ONE NEW business managers/secretary-treasurers from the United States and Canada attended a training course August 11-14 in Kansas City, Mo., to prepare them for their lodge leadership roles.

District 5 car show raises money for leukemia

Event honors daughter of Local 110 secretary

MISSISSIPPI RIVER DISTRICT 5 held its first annual car show fundraiser benefitting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society August 17 at the district’s offices in Slidell, La. Despite bad weather, 30 vintage cars were available for viewing. T-shirt sales and an auction of donated items brought in $2,300.

Boilermakers, other crafts cut recordable injuries to zero

BOILERMAKERS LOCAL 37 (New Orleans) and Local 110 (Hattiesburg, Miss.) were among the craft unions employed by Day & Zimmerman to be recognized August 30 by Entergy for working 100,000 hours since January 2011 without a recordable injury. The awards were presented at L-37’s union hall in Slidell, La., during a meeting of the Entergy Fossil Tripartite.

Rivals come together to build converter

Members of Louisiana L-37 and Florida L-433 stand in front of a converter they built, displaying flags of their favorite college teams.

MEMBERS OF LOCAL 37 (New Orleans) and 433 (Tampa, Fla.) are big supporters of their respective — and rival — state colleges: the LSU Tigers and Florida Gators. Yet they were able to put aside their differences for the common good — in this case, the fabrication of a converter and sulphur burner for Central Maintenance and Welding at the Mosaic Phosphates Plant, formerly known as the Uncle Sam Plant, in St. James, La.

Local 37 elects new officers

LOCAL 37 (NEW ORLEANS) Vice Pres. Lionel Hanna (l.) swears in newly-elected officers Richard Moity (c.) and Alan Melton, trustee. Moity, formerly a trustee, was elected to complete the term of president for John Anderson, who passed away March 8.

Northrop Grumman stewards attend training in Louisiana

LOCAL LODGE 1814 (Bridge City, La.) hosted steward training on Jan. 15-16 for workers represented by the New Orleans Metal Trades Council at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems.

The council supported the training, with stewards attending from Boilermaker Locals 37 (New Orleans) and 1814, as well as affiliate locals IBEW L-733, Painters L-2330, Pipefitters L-60, and the Asbestos Workers Union.

Thirty-seven stewards participated in the two-day training, discussing political action, safety, grievance handling and preparation, record keeping, and contract language.

National Transient Lodge

Effective Aug. 11, 2007 to July 10, 2008, for 32 members of the National Transient Lodge who manufacture tanks and tank systems for the grain processing industry at the Winbco Tank Company in Ottumwa, Iowa. Winbco is a custom manufacturer of tanks, pressure vessels, columns, and equipment for use in the food, grain, ethanol, hydrocarbon, chemical, power, wastewater, fruit juice, and brewing industries.
