TOP DONORS TO CAF and LEF in 2013 received recognition during the 46th annual Legislative Education Action Program (LEAP) conference in Washington, D.C., April 28-May 1. The awards went to vice presidential sections, individual lodges and individual members.

WHEN MELVIN WAPPULA retired as a member of Local 647, Minneapolis, his boilermaker skills definitely did not end! He combined his physical skills with his creativity to liven up the streets of his home town, Middle River, Minn.

Area competitions test graduate apprentices

Great Lakes Area Competition

Events determine finalists for national title

THE U.S. NATIONAL Apprenticeship Competition marks the highest level of skills and knowledge testing for Boilermaker graduate apprentices. But before the finale, contestants are selected at the local lodge level to compete in their geographic areas.

In 2013, 37 graduate apprentices reached their area competitions, from which eight were selected by judges to enter the nationals.

L-647 raises $12,000 for cancer center

BOILERMAKERS FROM Local 647 in Mandan, N.D., present a $12,000 check to the Bismarck, N.D., Cancer Center Foundation (BCCF) July 27. The donation came after the local completed its second annual charity golf scramble for the foundation. The event, which was open to the public, drew 72 golfers and 29 business sponsors.

MOST holds project management training

Project management training, July 14-19, Kansas City, Mo.

Week-long class held in Kansas City

TWENTY MEMBERS REPRESENTING 12 Boilermaker lodges met in Kansas City, Mo., July 14-19 to attend a project management training class sponsored by MOST, the Boilermakers’ Mobilization, Optimization, Stabilization, and Training Fund.

The class was established by MOST, the Boilermakers International union, and the National Tripartite Committee to teach Boilermakers how to manage projects in a business-like manner, make decisions that positively impact project goals, and provide an overall benefit to the owner, contractor, and union.
