Union seamen protect ship from pirates

YOU’VE HEARD THE story of how the brave captain and crew of the Maersk Alabama kept Somali pirates from seizing it. What you probably haven’t heard is the role union training played in their victory.

In a televised interview, Third Engineer John Cronan credited the crew for never surrendering the ship. “We’re union members,” he said. “We stuck together and we did our job.”

Yet every day the basic right of workers to form unions is threatened. The Employee Free Choice Act can give those workers a chance to form a union.
