Canadian study guide teaches learning skills

TRAINING COURSES CAN be more productive — and easier to complete — if you begin with the right set of learning skills. That is the premise of a new study guide developed by the Canadian Boilermaker National Training Program in conjunction with the Construction Sector Council (a Canadian labor and business partnership).

Boilermaker training coordinators and instructors from across Canada meet March 18-19 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to review a new study guide for learning skills.

Intended for apprentices as well as experienced members taking upgrade courses or seeking an additional trade ticket, the guide focuses on such essential skills as how to take an exam, reading text and extracting information, taking and organizing notes, reading and creating charts, and understanding various testing formats.

The guide is designed as a self-study course, but it can also be used in a directed classroom setting.

Training coordinators and instructors from across Canada met March 18-19 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to review the guide. They received copies to take back to their lodges and schools. National Training Director Grant Jacobs said the guide will also be available on the Boilermakers’ Canadian Web site at www.boilermaker.ca.
