VIDEO: Purdue professor discusses ‘Occupy Super Bowl’

Tithi Bhattacharya, an associate professor of South Asian History at Purdue University and a protester who is taking part in Occupy the Super Bowl, discusses the protest and the opposition to Indiana’s so-called “right-to-work” law. Gov. Mitch Daniels signed the legislation Feb. 1 despite weeks of protest from labor unions, Democrats, and community leaders. Critics say the new law will result in lower wages and diminished collective bargaining rights.


Right to work passes Indiana Senate

THOUSANDS OF UNION members, including Boilermakers, rally outside the Indiana statehouse in Indianapolis against right to work as the state Senate votes 28-22 to pass the legislation today. Gov. Mitch Daniels is expected to sign the bill into law, making Indiana the 23rd state in the nation with “right to work for less” on the books.

$416 million project will generate renewable energy

ABOUT TWO DOZEN Boilermakers are working under National Transient Division articles of agreement to build draft tube liners for the $416 million, 84-MW Cannelton Hydroelectric Plant near Hawesville, Ky.

National Steel Erection, Inc. (NSE) has the contract for the liners. Each is 30 feet in diameter and 60 feet long. Their function is to direct water from the Ohio River through turbines, turning generators to produce electricity. The project adjoins the existing Cannelton Locks and Dam.

Democratic leader says RTW “doesn’t put Hoosiers back to work.”

IN A FIERY written statement broadcast via e-mail Jan. 25, Indiana State House Minority Leader B. Patrick Bauer unloaded on Republican House members who helped pass a “right to work for less” bill. If House Bill 1001 becomes law, Indiana will become the 23rd right to work state.

Bauer, the House Democratic leader from District 6, has been an outspoken critic of right to work and has led the statehouse charge against it for the last two legislative sessions.

JASON DUPUIS, co-coordinator for the Northeast Area Apprentice Program and member of Local 237 (Hartford, Conn.) was featured Jan. 26 on Union Sportsmen’s Brotherhood Outdoors television series. The episode, titled “Boilermaker Meets Bull Moose,” will be aired again on the Sportsman Channel Thursdays at 11:00 p.m. (ET), Fridays at 1:00 p.m. (ET), and Mondays at 6:00 a.m. (ET).

Court backs new union election rule

Will impact airline, railroad employees

A U.S. COURT of appeals has upheld a rule change by the National Mediation Board toward fairer union representation elections for airline and rail employees. The new NMB rule, issued in 2010, establishes that a majority of employees who vote in union elections — rather than a majority of eligible voters — is required to win. Under the previous rule, which had existed since 1935, employees who did not vote were counted as “no” votes.

Program places military veterans in construction jobs

CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER Stephen Harper, along with provincial and local politicians, joined with Boilermakers and military veterans at the Local 146 Training Center in Edmonton, Alberta, January 6 to kick off Canada’s new Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) program. The program is a government, labor, and business partnership designed to recruit transitioning military veterans into construction jobs through the Canadian Building Trades.

IN A NOVEL approach to choosing scholarship winners, West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va., requires its 12 finalists to create a video about themselves and to amass online votes. The top vote-getter will receive a four-year full scholarship worth $120,000. Second- and third-place winners will receive lesser four-year grants.
