Walker survives, but loses state Senate

SCOTT WALKER, THE Wisconsin governor who sparked international outrage by leading the charge to strip the state’s public workers of their collective bargaining rights, survived a recall vote June 5 with the help of wealthy corporate backers and sympathetic media supporters. But it was only a partial victory. Republicans lost their majority in the Wisconsin Senate through recalls in that body, which will make it difficult for Walker to do further damage to public workers and unions.


What repealing health care reform would cost

HOUSE SPEAKER John Boehner (R-OH-8th) has promised to bring his bill to repeal health care reform up for a vote this Wednesday, January 12. His proposal is pure theater, of course. Regardless of what happens in the House, a companion bill will never get past the Senate. President Obama will not even need his veto to stop this one.

As you know, over the past nine months our union has been part of the national conversation and legislative process to reform health care. To say that process has not been pretty would be an understatement. However, the process will end this weekend when the United States House of Representatives and Senate consider final passage of health care legislation.

IP Jones named to Obama Clean Coal Jobs Task Force

WASHINGTON D.C., SEPT. 29 — The Obama-Biden campaign announced last week the creation of a Clean Coal Task Force aimed at furthering Sen. Obama’s and Sen. Biden’s commitment to creating jobs and energy independence through clean coal. Boilermakers International President Newton B. Jones will be a member of the Task Force, which includes leaders representing workers from key coal-producing states. The group will work to promote the Obama-Biden agenda to invest in advanced coal-based technologies, create more jobs in the coal sector and enhance mine safety.
